Chinese legend has it that once upon a time a dog bit the moon to create its shape during the eclipse. The reason it is red is still unknown.

Many believe it to be blood, some say it is a red dog's hair. Some say too many beenda peejoes. I kinda think it is a total lunar eclipse caused by the earth's shadow. Since the moon will be in southern Aquarius and just shy of perigee it will appear about 10% larger. Since it will pass through the southern umbra, it will also appear to be redish for about 3 hours. This is an atmosphere effect.
